Reflection questions-week 1 2/9/18

1. What progress have you made?

We have successfully shot, edited and uploaded a 30-second film opening onto Youtube. It was my first time shooting and editing an actual video and a little bit of acting.

2. What problems/issues have you overcome?

At first, our ideas were not solid and we couldn't get them together, also we were running out of time filming as we only had half an hour to film.

3. What have you learnt and enjoyed?

I have learned to shoot footages from different angles and perspectives, and I have also learned to edit videos in Adobe Premiere and iMovie.

4. What is your plan of action for next week?

We will start to plan for our 2-minute opening, it will be more serious and the scale of work will be larger.

feedback3/9/18

WWW

- good use of soundtrack (music from Soundcloud)

- tone was established; memory reflection)

- opening includes Barry Bobson so the audience knows the story is about them; prepared audience for human landscape

- good use of cinematography; shots from different angles and directions, creating depth in the last shot

- interesting movement of character through the scenes

EBI

- can apply scene grading/add filters to set the  mood & tone further

- add movie titles and credits

- emotional manipulation could have been stronger; hook the audience more effectively

- add foreshadowing; leading to the next scene,  what is going to happen

comparing the opening of Up

Watch the film opening of UP, compare and contrast it with your film opening and evaluate which is the most effective and why?

In the opening of UP, it has established the mood and tone of the movie to be rather dreamy and involves the children’s imagination. There’s a use of crediting showing the information about the production team and the movie title.

The boy being narrated with the script from possibly a documentary, it shows that he imagines himself being the explorer, imitating a tree stump as mount Everest.

When the boy walked into the house with the girl’s voice, there is a sense of intimidation and mystery, along with the boy’s curiosity. The audience are hooked into the scene to see what will happen next.

At the end of the opening, the scene foreshadowed that the next scenes are going to be about the two children's relationship.

Reflection questions-week 5 30/9/18

1. What progress have you made?

We have done our protagonist and antagonist research, knowing their background information and what makes them act the way they do. We also looked into props and costume that will be used in each scene to enhance the authenticity in our film, budget in what we have to spend on some props/costume. We have also divided the roles between the two of us and made a treatment of the film which includes things like title, production company, tagline, genre, synopsis etc. Casting and release forms were also made during this week to be sent to the actors' parents to let them play in our film. Ploy drew the storyboards based on our script, giving a clearer look of what our film would be like.

2. What problems/issues have you overcome?

We couldn't figure out what the protagonist and antagonist's background story and what leads to their actions in our film. We did not really know what props to use to strengthen the emotions in our film.

3. What have you learnt and enjoyed?

We have learned the components into making a protagonist and an antagonist for example, costume, background story etc. We have also learned that costumes and props can make a crucial difference in films.

Reflection questions-week 6 7/10/18

1. What progress have you made?

During week 6, I have done fresh and unique research, learning how to make our film unique and stand out among the others, environment research and theme research. As a part of initial roles research, I did a research on colour grading which is one of the important parts of the film that can influence the audiences' emotions and feelings, which I will be working on our film as an editor. We also wrote the first two drafts of the script, which will be used in the film. shotlist, risk assessment, call sheets. Therefore finishing my idea development section of the website, leading to production. These are some photos from our filming day.

2. What problems/issues have you overcome?

We were not sure what the theme of our movie would be, and what environment would be suitable according to our storyline. Also, I did not have much knowledge about editing and colour grading, making it hard at first to get start.

3. What have you learnt and enjoyed?

We have learned what kind of environment suit different stories / plots and how the theme of the film can have an influence on how the film is carried out.

Reflection questions-week 8-9

 25/10/18 - 1/11/18

1. What progress have you made?

Throughout  the time span, I have done research analysing the  use of media representation to pass messages / ideas  to the audience, using film extracts from "Matrix" and "They Live". I have done the semiotics which is the study of signs and symbols and how it can create meanings. Lastly, stereotyping using examples from the film "The Breakfast Club" which shows 5 different characters with  components such as costume, hair style and makeup to create the difference in characteristics the audience can interpret.

2. What problems/issues have you overcome?

It was tricky at first to find the hidden messages in the extracts, and our interpretations were relatively different as there are many ways for the scene to be portrayed according to each person's perspective.

3. What have you learnt and enjoyed?

I have learned that there are many components that can be used to interpret messages from a scene and how deep messages can be hidden in a simple scene

Reflection questions-week 10-12 8-22/11/18

1. What progress have you made?

Throughout these couple weeks, I have learned the components of  a scene "Mise en scene" which includes;

  • settings and props

  • costume hair and makeup

  • lighting and colours

  • facial expression and body language

  • blocking/composition positioning of characters/objects within the frame

I have also learned about  the variety of shot sizes, angles, movements and techniques that can be used during filming.

2. What problems/issues have you overcome?

It was challenging to analyse each component of mise en scene in each frame/shot of a film, and how each component being slightly different can change the whole mood/interpretation of the film can be confusing.

3. What have you learnt and enjoyed?

I have learned how a slight change of one component in mise en scene can have an impact on the mood and tone of the scene, and how different camera techniques can be used to enhance the mood of each scene.

Reflection questions-week 13 23/11/18

1. What progress have you made?

During this week, I have made a short film based on a limited amount of shot sizes, angles and movements. I now know how to combine a variety of shots in order to tell a story.

2. What problems/issues have you overcome?

It was challenging to  use all the shots together as the variety is rather limited and was not as effective as a wider variety.

3. What have you learnt and enjoyed?

I have learned how different stories can be told through the use of shots, the genre, the perspective and the emotion can be changed through the use of shot sizes, angles and movements.

Reflection questions-week 14-15 9/11/18

1. What progress have you made?

Throughout these weeks, I have learned about cinematography, in regards to camera shots, framing and lighting. I have leaned the difference between several camera shots, such as medium shot, long shot, close up shot, etc. I have also learned the different components of lighting, including brightness, contrast, focus, depth of field, grain, colour, perspective, look and quality of light.

2. What problems/issues have you overcome?

There are many different methods of camera shots and lighting styles to use in a film. Sometimes it is hard to choose from a huge variety.
